I have noticed that more and more classes are popping up encouraging people that they too can be the next independent educator in a day. While I am happy people are achieving their dreams. I want people to know one very important thing, you need experience. And without belittling any brands or people I will use myself for reference and a punching bag.
So let’s begin, to put it plain and simple, taking a class for 3 to 4 days does not warrant you to be a QUALIFIED educator for the masses. And here’s why, you need experience, qualifications, achievements, and personality. I will breakdown all of these to get a better understanding.
Experience. This is the foundation of a great educator, They say with knowledge comes great power, and it’s best to have a full history of products and applications. I have a binder of certifications from all the classes I took, I didn’t just decide well, I know how to use chrome powder let me teach someone else! No I gained insight on multiple applications to make sure I’m doing it correctly, I became versatile in different lines because they aren’t all treated the same. I also sat quietly and studied others and read books. With experience, you can establish yourself as an educator worth teaching.
Qualifications and Achievements, this is a touchy subject as everyone qualifies differently. If you go to school for podiatry. Obviously you know feet better than nail art. I don’t believe being a nail competitor necessarily makes you a great educator, most competition nails aren’t aren’t even worn in a salon setting. But what qualifies you, and what have you achieved? Take a seat and think. For me, I have been awarded best nails twice, I have been published in magazines and articles, and have done interviews. I don’t really see myself as a celebrity nail artist because I didn’t do it on my own. My best friend did it for me, but it’s a title I’m appreciative to have. All these accolades give me VALUE. As an educator you have to be valuable to the next person you’re teaching.
What I will say is I’m thankful of the impressions I’ve made and people who took a chance on me. I’ve had people want me to teach classes when my own brand said I wasn’t ready. But they believed in me. Hell I have taught classes on behalf on said brand without even being labeled as an educator for them. That’s value.
Personality. Lastly, no one wants a dud of a person who can’t hold attention. You don’t have to be a flashy person, but let’s face it, learning can become boring quick. You have to start off strong and finish strong and leave an impression, you want them to come back right? Impressions are everything, I’ve seen people walk out of classes before. If you have to stop every few hours for stretching, you’re boring hun.
Now I say this because I don’t want people to go out and fail. I have friends who have taken these classes and I’m sure they could do great. I’m just giving some tips and pointers to help you be better. I never want to kill a dream but inspire. However I’m honest. So be honest with yourself first. Classes are popping up left and right and you must choose what’s in the best interest of your future and how it will benefit you, don’t waste money because you want to try something but your heart isn’t in it.
I hope this helps potential people with their choices, and doesn’t put down brands but we gotta live in a world of reality and true expectations when we are going out to make lasting impressions on other people.
