Good Morning! Today I will be continuing my series of offering refresher articles to help aid your education from what you learned in nail school. For this refresher, I wanted to talk about nail disorders. Nail disorders are different from diseases, in that one, you can continue to work on your clients, and two, they aren’t always caused by a disease, you could of been born that way, or experienced trauma. Many factors come into play, but overall, we want to make sure we are giving our clients the best experience possible.
Let’s start by researching into a few nail disorders, as we begin to broaden our minds.

Koilonichia- is the concave curvature of the nail plate. Also called “ski jump” nails.
These nails should be filed carefully and can be somewhat fixed with nail enhancements.

Horizontal Grooves- are horizontal impressions across the nail plate.
Can be evened out with a good base coat, but may disappear if caused by trauma.

Vertical Grooves- are vertical impressions in the nail plate.
Just like horizontal, these can be evened out with a base coat, and may grow out.

Melanonychia- is a black or brown darkening spot or stripe on the nail.
It is an increased production of melanin, and can be caused by traumas or disorders in the body.

Nail Psoriasis- Shallow or deep holes in the nail plate.
Can lead to thick fingernails, nail lifting from the nail bed, and can be covered with enhancements.
While it’s great that we can still work on nails with disorders, we still must practice good caution. Taking care of clients with disorders should be just as important as ones without. But, it is important we can get together to learn more and gain that knowledge so that we can accommodate everyone. I encourage everyone to study these disorders so that we can broaden and open our minds and improve ourselves. I hope that these series are helping your day to day lives and your business. Stay tuned to our next article as we cover nail conditions, see ya later sweets.
