Hey there and how it’s going! I wanted to help you all take better nail photos by using the best example I have. Me! That’s right! In the last 7 years of doing nails I have been on quite a journey and best believe I know I can help you!
I have learned many things over time when it comes to lighting, poses, and even backgrounds. And all this can come together to make or break your nail photos. And you don’t want to do that. You need the best photos to show your clients how good your work is. But if you can’t take a great nail photo, well, it all just goes downhill from there.
So where do we begin? Let’s start with
Overhead Lighting and Posing.

You see, it’s great to have overhead lighting, as it is the most common. Light typically comes from above. However, you have to remember to pose in a good way as well. Because if you don’t, you’re gonna get an awful shadow that will ruin your nail photo.
So a great tip to do better is to rotate the hand so it is fully Lit. And then we will see that full photo shining beautifully. Remember this is our first impression. We want it to be great.
Dark Backgrounds

Now this is kind of an opinion as this can be hit or miss. Dark backgrounds can either make your photo or break your photo. Take for instance this example, while the dark background highlights the white nails, it doesn’t do much for the dark nails. The busyness kind of flows altogether a bit. So while it’s a good photo, having a smidgen brighter background can make it a better nail photo.
Bad Editing

Here is a photo from very early on in my nail career. It was absolutely funny to me and my client because she is nowhere near this dark. However, because of bad lighting and bad editing I manipulated this photo beyond belief. So watch out as bad editing can definitely taint your image. Literally.
Finally, It all comes together

When we learn from our mistakes, we can produce the most wonderful things. Take this picture for example. Not only do I have all the nails in a row. But the lighting is bright, the background isn’t dark or busy, and editing is just right. We aren’t changing anything just highlighting the nails.
Taking the time to cross examine and see what needs to be done for every picture is crucial to producing a well liked photo. And it doesn’t take any extra homework, just learn from others whose photos you really like that are very clean. Do what they do. Let them inspire you. All these things will help you take better nail photos.
So go out and do great things future nail tech. Your photos are waiting to be seen by the world. I’ll see ya later sweets!
