Hello all! Welcome back to another amazing blog post where we learn something new, something old, maybe even a refresher! Today I wanted to talk about HEMA, it seems to be the talk of the town, and well I thought I could give us a one source place for all of us to take in what it really is. Let us dive in shall we?

First and foremost, HEMA which is an acronym for Hydroxyethyl methacrylate, is a monomer very commonly used in nail products for adhesion. While it is also used in many other applications such as the dental industry, im going to focus as it pertains to nails here. HEMA is a known allergen, which means it is strong enough to cause allergies. However, under safe levels this can be used safely. But because it is an allergen, you must use common sense and follow safety protocols to ensure you don’t create an allergic reaction over time. This is when we as nail tech must come together to use our potentially hazardous products, safely. Knowledge is key and what separates us professionals from DIY. But also by learning this information here.

So how do you know if a product contains HEMA?

When looking at your nail products, analyze the container, it will clearly say the ingredients and if it includes HEMA. Take a look at the image for an example.

How to prevent over-exposure

When it comes to safely handling products with HEMA if you so choose to continue to do so, be sure to follow safety protocols. This can be including, wearing gloves, using a mask, keeping product off the skin, using the correct UV lamp, and more. When using these practices, you are ensuring the safety of your client and you as well.

Now that you can identify HEMA, and its usage, and how to take precautions, what shall you do for your salon? Well, that will be up to you. When used correctly there is no danger to a product with it, but at the same time, many companies have opted to not include it in their ingredients for the safety of all. So the choice truly is yours.
