Good Morning you solitary salutes making sales! How are you today? More and more recently I have seen on social media, that it seems as though fear is causing quite the distraction and uproar in the nail world. I say this because lately fear, abuse of products, and lack of education and training, is seeming to be more apparent as a tactic for others to put others down.
When I started in the nail industry I was blind to everything. I didn’t know people other than Asians did nails, I did not know conventions and tradeshows existed, and I didn’t know nail art was more than just lines and dots. It’s so easy to be someone that just follows what you know until you learn something else. It really makes you go, ahhh, I didn’t know that.. And while this can all seem so stereotypical or less educated of me, the fact of the matter is, you don’t know, what you don’t know.
So once I started going to school for nails, I had a black teacher, I saw that competitions were a thing, and nail products can be constructed in a way to make three dimensional objects such as helicopters! So as you can see, it’s so easy to be a random human and think of the nail world so little until you fully immerse yourself and realize it’s so much more.
So while I gladly saw the beauty of it, there always has to be a villain, and that bring us to 2024, when social media is at the top of all sources for a quick find. We put so much faith into social media, that most people don’t even research anything anymore. And that’s the problem of fear mongering. By definition, Fear Mongering is the act of using fear as a way to talk about an issue. How awful…
Lately, fear has been a way to boost sales, incite people to purchase specific products, and to stop using others. Commercials are using fear to stop using gel lamps, using fear to stop using e-files, and using fear for so much more. It’s so disheartening and quite distasteful. With apps such as Tik Tok and reels on Instagram and Facebook, more and more people are realizing fear can be used to get people to view their products or stop using others, make people start new habits and break others. But why?
Why do people need to use fear? Because it works, positivity is quite heavenly and common, but negativity is dramatic and brings views. Humans take delight into viewing something scandalous and bad. Makes them want to watch a little more and a little longer. But also, without research, they are quick to believe, and why should they not, you just exaggerated a few science facts and bam, you’ve won them right over. But in doing so we are dividing the community and spreading misinformation.
So how can we stop this? Honestly, we can’t. We can try to forever combat it of course, but everyday and every month, someone will find a new tactic to get people persuaded to move on over to their new class, or new product, or new technique. Because it simply works, shameful as it may be, it’s the way of the world. Hopefully it’ll pass and more and more of us will override the hype of fear mongering. With proper education, the valued techs will be unstoppable and will persevere. Until then, be the change you want to see. I’ll see you next time sweets.
