Recognizing Nail Diseases

Hello all! Today I wanted to bring you another segment of learning to give you a refresher course from what you learned in school. Collaborating with Pivot Point, I would like to offer this insightful advice to keep your knowledge strong and growing. Today we shall discuss nail diseases. It’s very important we keep these in mind and our brains up to date so that we can be sure we are working appropriately in the salon.

The goal of this refresher is to recognize but not diagnose our clients. When put forth with a nail disease, please be sure to refer your client to a doctor or specialist, as we should not be working on these nails, clients should be seeking treatment. Just like other bodily diseases, nail diseases can be caused by, bacteria, fungi, viruses, or other illnesses.

Let’s take a below at a few of the nail diseases in the industry so that we can recognize them, just in case if they ever approach the nail table. And remember we never want to work on these nails, clients should be referred to a doctor.

Onychomycosis- A fungal infection of the nail.

Nail will be spongey, and appears to be discolored black to brown or white.

Onychia- is inflammation of the proximal and lateral nail folds.

Living skin will be swollen, red, and tender to the touch.

Myxoid Cyst- infection in nail fold where skin has been broken and become infected.

Small sacks of fluid begin to swell near the folds, this is a bacterial infection.

Onychatophia- is when the nail plate starts to waste away.

The nail begins to shrink and separate from the nail bed.

Onychomadesis- is shrinking of the nail plate beginning at the matrix.

The nail matrix will stop creating plate cells creating in nail loss. The nail bed will be sensitive, regrowth may happen.


So now that you have seen a few diseases, do you feel confident that you can spot the difference from a healthy nail to a compromised one? Thats ok if you need to study, I know I had to. But being able to recognize the differences and spot them will make your services easier and your clients happier and on to healthy nails. Tune in next time as we move on to nail disorders!
